Roman Temples, Wadi Abou Moussa, Nahr el Bared

data access 27689

Two temples according to Aliquot1. One is in the valley of Wadi Abou Moussa, a tributary of Nahr el Bared at a height of 290 m. altitude, the other on the summit of "Qalaat Wadi el Moussa" to the left of the river and "dominating the valley". The description fits the location chosen but local advice should be taken before setting out!

An inscription in a rock face near the upper temple reads

For the salvation of Caesar Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Augustus, the master Diogenes son of Choregios, with his wife Diodota, having made a vow for the master's and his family's salvation, caused to be constructed this shelter consisting of the interior dining room, the annex portico and the water pool, shaping this rock which extended as far as the wall of the sanctuary, and they consecrated it on the 8th day of Dystros in the 495th year [of the Seleucids, so 184 AD in the reign of Commodus]2 3.
