According to Apollodoros Kelenderis [Kilindria] in Cilicia Trachea was built by Sandon/Sandan, a Hittite god. According to  Pomponius Mela it was Samian colony - Duo deinde promunturia sunt Sarpedon, finis aliquando regni Sarpedonis, et quod Ciliciam a Pamphylia distinguit Anemurium, interque ea Celenderis et Nagidos Samiorum coloniae; sed Celenderis Sarpedoni propior1.

During the Roman Period city was rebilt, and a castle, palace, aqueduct, baths and harbor.
