On the spot where Romans built a fortress who guarded the river, stands a modern interpretation of the fortress with walls six meters high: Castellum Hoge Woerd. Behind the high walls are an archaeological museum, stables and an educational center for environmental education, a theater and a café-restaurant.
Castellum is built on the exact spot where two thousand years ago, the original fort. Building on an archaeological monument requires a special approach. First is ultra light built so piles were hardly necessary (only in the theater). As a result, the substrate in which archaeological treasures are still not disturbed.
The pride of the museum is the Roman ship "De Meern 1".
