The Legio XVI Gallica, garrisoned in the ancient city of Samosata constructed the bridge at the beginning of the IInd century, ca 211 AD. The existing bridge probably replaced an earlier bridge, built during the reign of Emperor Vespasian; in the years 69-79 BC.
