Assini of Messinia was founded by Dryopes, one of the proto-Greek Pelasgian tribes, who were considered to have had a kinship relationship with the Dolopes and the Aitolians. It was founded by the Dryopes, who had been banished from another city called Asine in the Argolis when their territory was devastated by the Argives, around the year 720 BC.
