Annotations

The Torres Torres Arab Baths are located at Plaça de l'Església number 5 in Torres-Torres, in the Valencian region of El Camp de Morvedre. They are located next to the town, associated with the Séquia Major de Sagunt that borders the old urban center.

The covered enclosure of the Baths is a rectangular floor plan that contains three rectangular rooms also covered with vaults, arranged in parallel and in a north-south orientation, known by the names cold, warm and hot. The entrance to the Baths was located in the north. From the hall there was access through a semicircular door to the cold room. The cold room is the most austere of the three. The warm room is the one with the largest surface area and width. It is divided into three parts by means of two semicircular arches made of bricks, which form two side bedrooms raised one step with respect to the central space. The third room is the hot one and has a surface area of about 6.80 x 2.42 m, and is heated by an underground chamber where hot air is injected.

The flooring of the Baths is made of baked bricks arranged in a herringbone pattern. The interior lighting is achieved by the skylights. They have a star-shaped section and are truncated-pyramidal at the base on the intrados of the vault.

The archaeological excavation of 2003 has allowed, in addition to offering a more precise dating - 14th century, already in Christian times -, to document the structures corresponding to the Vestibule or rest room of the baths. The room has a square floor plan, with perimeter walls built of rammed earth with a mortar crust.

Typologically, the Torres-Torres Baths respond to the model that is repeated throughout the entire Arab historical geography: three rooms with a wide central room. The skylights with a starry section and a truncated pyramid shape are stylistically representative of Arab architecture. The hydraulic system, based particularly on the supply of the Major Drought of Sagunt, could be complemented by a neighboring cistern, from which the one that, designed to serve the population, still exists, would derive.
