BEROE (Piatra Frecăţei), Ostrov com., Tulcea county.

Roman and Byzantine fortified settlement with vestiges from the Bronze Age and Getic. Roman and Byzantine necropolis researched (over a thousand graves).
Mentioned and known by J.Weiss and C.Moisil (1911), the site had its first systematic research in the late 1950s. XX, with the necropolis, dug by A.Petre and D.Valceanu from IAB until 1963. At that time, prisoners (doctors, engineers, etc.) worked from the nearby prison. Since 1972, researches have been resumed only in the fortified settlement of D.Valceanu and Al.Barnea. They have been interrupted temporarily since 1974, with the leadership of Al.Barnea since 1975, which has coordinated a team from ICEMT and a brief German collaboration (1999) between 1997 and 2003.
