Avan was an ancient city in the region of Elam, which was important city in the history of Mesopotamia and especially in the second half of the third millennium BC. Although it was situated near Susa in southwest Iran, its exact location is unknown. A coalition of four rulers from southwest Persia, led by some king of Avan, provided vigorous resistance to the eastern campaigns of King Sargon of Akkadia (r. 2270-2215 B.C.). The coalition was finally defeated, and the centre of Elamite kingdom was transferred from Avan to Susa.
According to the Susa kinglist Puzur-Inshushinak (Kutik-Inshushinak r, ca 2100 BC) was the las king of Avan.
