  1. Although no direct proof has been found to confirm this hypothesis, Gordion distance from other known points on the road indicates that the statio lay at or near the site. In 1996, the discovery of a Roman soldier’s tombstone in a field near the Citadel Mound has provided the first concrete evidence that the military were operating in some capacity in the area
