- The Sacred Way connecting the cities of Miletus & Didyma dates back to the 7th./6th.C.bce. Yet it was only in the 1st.C.ce.under the Roman Emperor Trajan, that the last part within the sanctuary was paved. Directly in front of the modern village thoroughfare, the Sacred Way is cut short. Its continuation & connection with the Temple of Apollo have been lost. On both sides of the paved part of the road there used to be several buildings, which were destroyed in the 7th.C.ce. Especially prominent is the so-called 'felsbarre' on the western side of the road, which used to be surrounded by a portico in Roman times. The walls of this portico have been partially reconstructed. More porticoes used to stand along the other side of the road. North of the 'felsbarre' the so-called 'Gateway' forks off the Sacred Way. During the time of the Roman Empire, this path led to a bathing complex, the remains of which can still be seen today. (Site information board)
