It is impossible to give a precise date for the construction of the Camp, and in any case it may very well have evolved over time.  Small amounts of pottery found by archaeological excavators in 1924 were identified as being of Early Iron Age date.[xv]  Bronze objects are also said to have been found in the vicinity, which may suggest Bronze Age (c. 2000-750 BC) occupation of the site1. The very first remains are Paleolithic hand axes dated ca 8000 BC.
