The very first mention of Rafah dates back to the time of Pharaoh Seti I: in 1303 BC under the name RPH. In 925 BC Pharaoh Sheshonq I was camping near Rafah during his campaign in Levant. In 925 BC. Assyrian king Sargon II defeated the Egyptians at Raphah in 720 BC., The Battle of Raphia took place between the Egyptian troops of Ptolemy IV and the Seleucid troops led by Antiochus III in 217 BC. In the 1st century BC the city built.
