Castle of San Esteban de Gormaz

Located on top of a hill, the castle dominates the village and the bridge that crosses the Duero River. San Esteban de Gormaz arose as a fortified square due to its strategic importance in the defensive line of the Duero, in the 10th century, being the field of numerous battles. Castle of Muslim origin, with a long and narrow base, it was later reformed by the Christians. The construction was made with carved ashlars, probably of Roman origin. A canvas of wall subsists raised plumb on a rocky vertical cliff and impossible to climb. Inside you can still see remains of rooms, cisterns and silos. Despite the few remains, it is of relevant importance and from there you can see, with the naked eye, the castle of Gormaz, 16 km away in a straight line SE.

It will be in the Middle Ages when the town reaches its maximum prominence. San Esteban de Gormaz was one of the five first order fortresses that, together with other smaller ones and the watchtowers, formed the Muslim border for surveillance and defense against the Christians in the so-called Castilian Extremadura, that is, the strategic line around to the Duero on which the "border" between the two cultures was formed around the 10th and 11th centuries. For this reason, the place has two fortresses: Castro Moro (or Castillo Viejo) located further northeast of the town (of which there is hardly anything left but the hill where it was located and two sections of mud wall that advance towards the south and to the west) and the so-called Christian castle, which watches over the population, and smaller.

The existence of two fortresses linked together can have a reasonable explanation. The original Muslim fortification, erected towards the North to monitor Christian incursions, gave way to the Christian one, located towards the Duero in order to control Islamic movements. Subsequently, these two defensive elements were joined by a wall to give more security to the complex.

The Christian castle is better preserved than the Muslim one. Its northern canvas remains, although the plundering of ashlars to which it has been subjected is evident. Remains of the Muslim mud wall can still be seen. One towards the area of the traditional wineries that, with great losses, ends in a cube at the back of house no. 77 on Calle Mayor. The other, in an easterly direction, towards the place called "Valdizán", ending in a cube that was part of the Puerta de San Gregorio. The next element is a tower that gives continuity to the wall, which runs parallel to the river up to the gate of the town.
