The Castle of Osma

The first documentary reference to the existence of a Christian castle in Osma dates from 910. A county fortress was then built whose towers have disappeared. Fortunately we know of its existence and its characteristics thanks to some drawings preserved in the Burgo Cathedral.

In the year 934, the rock was refortified by Ramiro II de León who built new canvases. The way it would have looked in the 10th century is not too different from what it looks like today. To build this royal fortress, construction material from the neighboring city of Uxama was reused: ashlars, column drums and other elements of enormous quality were transported and collected to build the Ramirense castle.

A small military contingent controlled this defense and it was necessary to resort to ingenious solutions that would prove effective against the imposing and very numerous Caliphate army quartered a short distance away, in the castle of Gormaz. To get an idea of the military potential of the Muslims, we will mention that the body of archers that Abderramán III, the first caliph of Córdoba, recruited for the war campaigns that he sustained in this territory was made up of 7,000 soldiers.

Osma Castle had, among other construction innovations, shooting chambers with arrow slits in the lower part of the walls with an innovative shooting channel that prevented enemy archers from aiming at them. This type of loophole is only known in the Holy Land during the First Crusade. In this regard, we know that there was a direct relationship between one of the lords of Osma and the construction of Christian castles in the Holy Places.

The steep slopes of more than 45 degrees and the arrow slits built by the Leonese meant that the caliph's army withdrew without being able to take the small fortress. The interpretation that both sides forged of the battle is not without curiosity. According to a Christian chronicle, the host of Abderramán III demonstrated enormous cowardice by not going up the slopes to fight. For their part, the Andalusians left testimony of how cowardly Ramiro's Leonese had been for not abandoning the fortress and fighting in the open field.

Almanzor did manage to take the fortress and carry out some works, perhaps the lining of the count towers. Later it passed into Christian hands with Fernando I in 1011, who in turn undertook the works on the battlements. From that date it acquires enormous importance for Christians in their defense of the Duero border.

The fortification was also completed with an advanced tower to collect water from the river; these types of towers are known as corachas. In 1194 King Alfonso VI, who had already taken Toledo in 1086, conquered Medinaceli and the border was definitively moved to the south. From then on the castle experienced a prolonged decline.

At the end of the 13th century or the beginning of the 14th century, the troops of María de Molina in her fight for the throne of Castile against the infantes de la Cerda stayed in this royal castle.

The ambitious archaeological excavation, prior to the rehabilitation of the castle, has made it possible, among many other data, to study the mines that were used during the Spanish Succession War by supporters of the Bourbons to blow up the castle and which obviously were not effective in their purpose. During the excavation, he has also recovered the famous shooting chambers with medieval arrow slits, blinded by subsequent reuse.

In the 18th century the castle was abandoned for good. The towers of the county castle were completely dismantled and a large part of the ashlars of Roman origin, coming from Uxama, which had been used for the county and Ramirense constructions, were moved and reused to build the foundations of the Burgo de Osma cathedral.
