The Altenum Roman Camp is located on the Maxinca (Măciuca???) hillside, 2.5 km from the Oltina city, on the banks of the Danube. The camp covers an area of 2 hectares and is surrounded by a wall of earth. It has been preferred the “Altenum” name in order to distinguish it from the ancient city Altinum, the modern city of Altino in northern Italy .
Procopius is the one who reminds of this settlement, with the name of “coloniae Altinum” or “Altenum”. Irimia and Emilia Popescu Historians have done some researches, from which there were discovered: a bronze military diploma dated from 14 August 100, an amphora with the inscription “HRISTON MARIA GHENA (Maria borns Christ), a Byzantine oven to burn ceramics, dating from the 4th-6th century, engraved bricks, coins of Diocletian and Constantine cel Mare, ceramic pots.
At Altenum (Altinum) there was a civil settlement and a station of the Roman river military fleet, from the 1st-4th century. In the past it also had a Danube port, but now the port was shut down because of clogging up of the arm of the Danube.
The Altenum Roman Camp was entered in the List of Historic Monuments in Constanta County, and in 2004 in list of historical monuments – Constanta County.
