The Wu’eira castle lies between Wadi Musa and the Bdul village of Um Seyhun. At one time it was an unconquerable Crusader castle standing high on top of the steep cliffs on three sides and Wadi Shi’ab Qais on the fourth. Built in the 12th century, it was one of several castles in the eastern highlands, devised to control the trade and communication route between Cairo and Damascus. The Crusader chronicles refer to it as Li Vaux Moise and the Arabs as Wu’eira. The former name is actually inaccurate as it refers to the whole of Wadi Musa – or Valley of Moses – whereas Wu’eira is the historical name given to the castle
