The large triple-aisled Petra Church was probably built in the second half of the fifth century AD, and destroyed by a fire or an earthquake in the middle of the sixth century AD. This church was discovered quite recently, in 1990 Kenneth W. Russell discovered the remains of the church with mosaic floors, marble screens. The basilica was destroyed by a fire, probably in the early 7th century.

In the storeroom adjacent to the basilica was an archive, which housed 152 scrolls, papyri recorded different transaction.
