Elaea

Aeolian Elaea, said to have been founded by Menestheus, leader of the Athenian contingent at the time of Troyan War ¹. She appears in history about 450 BC, at the time of the Athenian naval league. Later in 190 BC it was besieged by Antiochus of Syria, in 156 by Prusias, who destroyed all the country. In 90 AD site sufferded from an earthquake.  Anyway she still was existing in Early Byzantine times. Durin Roman period struck its own coins². As a suffragan of Ephesus Elaea is mentioned by most "Notitiae episcopatuum" as late as the twelfth or the thirteenth century³.
