A large Late Antique and Medieval fortified town located southwest of modern Tărgovište (Търговище, also rendered Targovishte), on a ridge of the Preslav Mountain. The site was known as Krumovo kale (“Krum’s castle”) before identification with the important town mentioned by al-Idrīsī as Misionis in the 12th century. In the Late Middle Ages it was named Kosovo, and appears as Kosova in the narrative of the Ottoman conquest in 1393.

The fortress appears to have been among those established or refurbished by Justinian in the 6th century. After destruction and a hiatus in occupation from the end of the 6th century, it was resettled by the Bulgarians in the 9th century. In the mid-12th century, al-Idrīsī describes the town as of ancient origins but still populous and flourishing in his day. The fortified perimeter was refurbished for the last time in the 12th–14th century, but the town was abandoned after the Ottoman conquest, when it was stormed and set on fire; shallow graves testify to the large number of casualties among the locals. Archaeological excavations were carried out in 1962–1972 and again from 2004. Only a small portion of the old settlement has been excavated, and it is estimated that the overall settled area would have exceeded 200,000 square meters.
