Thagaste (Souk Ahras)

Souk Ahras -  ancient Tagasta) - a city in the north-eastern part of Algeria. Originally a small Numidian village, inhabited by a Berber tribe. During the Roman Empire, the city was known as Tagaste and belonged to the province of Numidia. Tagaste is mentioned in the works of Pliny the Elder, a first-century Roman historian. and in the Itinerarium provinciarum Antonini Augusti,  the 3rd century register of the stations and distances along various roads. Although there is no more detailed data on the early history of the cityit is known as the birthplace of Saint Augustine. Today, Tagasta is a Catholic titular bishopric.
