When orginaly constructed, the wall from Mile Castle 49 west was built of turf instead of stone. Later in time, the turf wall was replaced with a stone wall built over the original turf. Between Mile Castles 49 and 51, the new stone wall was pushed forward from the original wall, and the original course is still visible.
