Maaloula, Mar Sarkis Monastery - St. Sergius Monastery

Mar Sarkis Monastery was built in the fifth century on the remains of a pagan temple. According to possibly pre-Constantinian, foundation date due to the exceptionally rare survival of a horseshoe-shaped altar table¹

In the monastery there were two of the oldest icons in the world, one depicting the Last Supper.
