Hama ( Biblical Hamath, ("Fortress") is a city on the banks of the Orontes River in west-central Syria. Hama was the center of the small Syro-Hittite (1180-800 BC) or Aramean kingdom of Hamath .  The city of Hama appears in the Bible as Hamath, in Assyrian texts as Amat/Ham(m)at.
