Lydda

According to the biblical description Lod was founded by the tribe of Benjamin when the Israelites took over the land¹. After being destructed by the Assyrians, Lod was re-established in the 5th century BC. It was settled again in the 2nd century BC and  named Lydda by Greeks. The Acts of the Apostles (chap. 9, 32) reports that Peter healed a man in Lod ²The Romans took the city and renamed it Diospolis (City of Zeus). The city was important as a birth and burial place of St. George. In the sixth century the city had become known as Hagion Georgopolis.
