Melchior Comte de Vogüé wrote the first scientific description of Dēhes after his visit in 1861. During an expedition on behalf of Princeton University, Howard Crosby Butler examined the place in 1899/1900 and published a summary description of the churches and residential buildings. In 1963 and 1966/67 the Russian architect George Tchalenko undertook the first detailed investigations that covered all buildings. Unfortunately never published.
