The very first church of St. Nicholas was built in the VI century AD over St. Nicholas' tomb and an older Christian church where Saint Nicholas served as a bishop. Later it was rebuilt in the 9th century after Arab attacks. Then in 1042 under the auspices of Constantine X.  In 1863 Tsar Alexander II bought the building and began the renovation, which was not completed.
