A Roman building, probably a villa, is indicated by numerous finds made at Windmill Hill, Capel St Mary from the 1920s onwards. Excavations have uncovered building foundations, a courtyard, painted wall plaster, opus signinum, window glass and glass vessels, the remains of a kiln (possibly a glass kiln rather than a pottery kiln), tesserae, flue tiles in a pit overlying a wooden water channel, a coin of Hadrian, a pair of bronze crouching lions, and roofing tiles. Many Roman finds from the site are in Ipswich Museum (accession number 963-53-4; 967-89). Other Roman finds have occurred in the vicinity (TM 03 NE 8, 9)1.
