Annotations

From there he came to Arkadia (Arcadia) and stirred up disorder, uniting the Arkadians against Sparta; among his methods of binding them by oath to follow him wherever he led was his zeal to bring the chief men of Arkadia to the city of Nonakris and make them swear by the water of the Styx. Near this city is said to be the Arkadian water of the Styx, and this is its nature: it is a stream of small appearance, dropping from a cliff into a pool; a wall of stones runs round the pool. Nonakris, where this spring rises, is a city of Arkadia near Pheneus1.
