Annotations

St. Nicholas' Monastery of Medea was built during the time of Emperor Justinian I (r. 527-565). The rock-cut monastery is located along Papuç Stream less than a kilometer west of Kıyıköy (medieval Medea) on the Black Sea coast. The entire monastery complex includes a rock-hewn three-aisled basilica. From the southern end of nartex stairs still preserved led to hagiasma.
