Roman Tyana in Hittite archives was Tuwanuwa/Tuwana. Kemerhisar is the site of the ancient city of Tyana and was centre of the minor Luwian state of Tuwanuwa. In Assyrian sources it is called Tuhana. In Hellenistic times Cappadocia was an independent kingdom. 17 AD Cappadocia lost independence and was converted into the Roman province of Cappadocia. In 372 during the Emperor Valens, Tyana became the capital of Cappadocia Secunda. In Late Antiquity, the city was known as Christoupolis - "city of Christ". In the 11th century, the Turks called the city Kilisehisar (Churchfort). Later the name was replaced by the name Kemerhisar (Vaultfort), The
