Saint Hripsime Church is one of the oldest churches in Armenia. It is dedicated to Saint Hripsim (died c. 290). Originally it was a mausoleum of St. Hiirpsime, built by Catholicos Sahak the Great in 395 AD. In 618 a tetraconch church completed by Catholicos Komitas.

The original church was built in the early fourth century. The northern wall of the cathedral contains two IVth century reliefs which depict Paul the Apostle and Saint Thecla.
