Modern Izmir. Originally an Aetolian city from the 11th century BC Smyrna passed to the Greeks. Roman since 130 BC. The writer Strabo called Smyrna the most beautiful city in Ionia. It was one of the cities that claimed to be the birthplace of the poet Homer. [1]
Smyrna has an uninterrupted history of settlement since the Neolithic–Copper ages.
