According to tradition, Aizanoi was founded by Azan, a mythical hero and forefather of the Phrygians living along the river Penkalas (Kocaçay), one of three sons of the legendary king Arkas and the nymph Erato. The site was inhabited in the Bronze Age period i.e. the third millenium BC. Aizanoi was divided by Penkalas River( Kocaçay) in two parts.
