The church dedicated to the martyr Saint Polyeuctus in Constantinople near Valens Aqueduct was built in the 6th century AD by Anicia Juliana, a Roman imperial princess and the daughter of the Western Roman Emperor Olybrius. The construction of the church began in 524 and was completed in 527 when Justinian came to the throne. Ayios Polyeuktos Church is considered one of the largest basilicas in Istanbul after Hagia Sophia.
