Lanuvium was in origin an independent city. After the defeat of the Latin League in 338 BC, it lost its political autonomy and was incorporated into the Roman state as a municipum. Later, the traditions which attributed its foundation to a Trojan (Lanoios) were elaborated. These gave special links of kinship and alliance with both Roma and the Sicilian ciry of Centuripe. The two principal cults in the city were those of Iuno Sospita Mater Regina and Hercules.
