Villa romana del Ruedo (Almedinilla)

Description:

The archaeological site of the Ruedo is set on the outskirts of the municipality of Almedinilla. The first archaeological excavation that revealed the site was carried out as emergency procedures relating to the construction of the A340 road (Estepa-Guadix) as it passes through the north of the town. The outcome of this work, it was able to document a Roman villa with a living space and a productive, whose business covers I to VII century, and a necropolis with tombs burial usually single and multiple covered with stone slabs, which fall in the final phase of the Hispano-Roman culture, with an occupation from the third century to VII.

Contrary to the necropolis, of which nothing remains visible today, the excavated remains of the villa discovered and visited. The plant is cutting Hellenistic and 'pars urbana "is kept in good condition. From 'pars rustica "some units were excavated, being in worse condition. They date from the first half of the century and the V.

As a result of archaeological excavations, have documented four construction phases that show the long occupation of the site.

Among the findings sculptural, very abundant, are: a group representing the legend of Perseus and Andromeda, only known work on this issue in the Iberian Peninsula, dating from the late first century or early second, a sculpture youthful possible representation Telephos the myth, the first half of the second century and a bronze representation of Hypnos or Somnus, lower the natural size, possibly the second quarter of the second century.
