Elaiussa Sebaste in Cilicia Tracheia, a port city on the south coast near Ayas, is built over a promontory between two harbours. The site was first settled at the end of the 2nd millennium BC and evolved into the Hellenistic city of Elaiussa. The name was changed to Sebaste in honour of Augustus (although the old name continued to be used) and the city flourished throughout the Roman and early Byzantine periods. It was abandoned in the late 7th century as a result of encroaching sand, earthquakes and the start of the Arab invasions. The site has been excavated since 1995 by Eugenia Equini Schneider of the University of Rome "Sapienza".
