Demetrias was a Greek city in ancient Thessaly, at the head of the Pagasaean Gulf, near the modern city of Volos. It was founded in 294 BC by Demetrius Poliorcetes, who settled there peoples from Nelia, Pagasae, Ormenium, Rhizus, Sepias, Olizon, Boebe and Iolcos. Starbo: Demetrias, which is on the sea between Nelia and Pagasae, was founded by Demetrius Poliorcetes, who named it after himself, settling in it the inhabitants of the nearby towns, Nelia and Pagasae and Ormenium, p425 and also Rhizus, Sepias, Olizon, Boebê, and Iolcus, which are now villages belonging to Demetrias.
