Today a small village named Idanha-a-Velha, it is hard to imagine this was once an important roman city, founded under the rule of emperor Augustus, and capital of the Igaeditanum tribe. It was later occupied by the Visigoths and then by the Moors.
From roman time there are some important visible structures like the roman wall, the podium of Jupiter's temple upon which the templars built a tower still standing nowadays, ruins around the visigothic cathedral, the necropolis and an impressive collection of roman funerary inscriptions.
Some structures unhearted near the temple may correspond to a bath house.
