Rerigonium, a center of the Novantae, has been sought in the area of Stranraer for a long while, without the discovery of any significant traces of an ancient town during modern infrastructure development. Combining local tradition, the orientation of a Roman road a little to the southwest at Dunragit, aerial photography observations, and archaeological finds, Mike McCarthy has loacted Rerigonium at the site of Innermessan farm 3km northeast of Stranraer, marked by a well-defined medieval castle motte, the remains of a fortification that once belonged to the Bishop of Whithorn. The identification has been met with support, but further investigation is needed to establish the precise geographical relationship between the medieval remains and earlier settlement on the site. It has also been noted that the names of Rerigonium and Dunragit may be related to Rheged, and that this Dark Age kingdom (which extended over Cumbria south of Hadrian's Wall) may have been originally centered on the region.
