According to local tradition, Matinale Castle (east of Cancello Scalo) was built by Tommaso II d'Aquino, Count of Acerra, after his marriage to the illegitimate daughter of Emperor Friedrich II in 1247. However, this is likely to have been at most a rebuilding or enlargement of an earlier fortification, attributed to a Lombard lord named Rudovaco in the 9th century and later a Norman lord named Ramberto. Largely abandoned after the 15th century.
