Annotations

Ancient and medieval Arsamosata is now partly submerged under the waters of the artificial lake built in 1973. In particularly dry seasons, the lakewaters recede to reveal parts of the submerged remains. The western portions of the settlement are located on higher ground and remain above the level of the lake, bearing the modern Turkish name of Örencik. The citadel of the ancient city also remains above water, as a peninsula in the lake.
