El Castillo (Structure A-6) is the tallest and most iconic structure at Xunantunich, standing about 40 meters (130 feet)tall, making it the second tallest Maya structure in Belize. It served as the ceremonial and cosmological center of the site, aligned with the axis mundi (intersection of the cardinal directions).
It was constructed in two main phases: The earlier, Structure A-6–2nd, had three doorways and dates to around 800 AD. The later, Structure A-6–1st, had doorways only on the north and south sides.
El Castillo is decorated with stucco friezes, some now reconstructed or protected by molds. These friezes depict

- A royal birth
- The tree of life connecting the underworld, earth, and heavens
- Framing elements like twisted cords, representing celestial phenomena
The pyramid likely had ritual and political importance, reflecting elite power and cosmological beliefs. Signs of damage suggest it may have been affected by an earthquake1.
