Lubaantun was a Late Classic Maya city (c. AD 730–890) in southern Belize, known for its mortarless black slate construction, rounded pyramid corners, and three ball courts. The city is notable for its many mould-made ceramic whistle figurines, likely used in rituals. Unlike other Maya sites, it lacks carved stelae and vaulted architecture.

Although linked to myths about the “crystal skull”, evidence shows it was likely not found here. Archaeologists believe Lubaantun was a regional cacao production center, built strategically between rivers for trade. It was abandoned soon after AD 8901.
