Established c. 200 BC, the city remained a major center until the Spanish conquest, having been taken over by Toltecs and Chichimecs in c. 1200 BC. Site of a notable massacre by the Spanish conquistadores in 1519. The great pyramid of Cholula, known as Tlachihualtepetl ("constructed mountain"), is the greatest in square footage and volume in Mesoamerica.
