Settlement founded in 43 BC as Colonia Copia Felix Munatia Lugdunum by Lucius Munatius Plancus. Later on the name changed to Colonia Copia Lugdunum. With the division of Gallia in 27 BC, Lugdunum became the capital of Gallia Lugdunensis. The population is estimated at 50 000 to 80 000 in the 2nd century AD. The city starts to decline at the end of the 2nd century, and loses its title as capaital of Gallia in 297 AD. At the beginning of the fourth century the water system declines and the population moves to the lower town.
