Annotations

Roman theatre in Bosra was built in the third century AD under the Roman emperor Severus Alexander.   It could hold 15 thousand viewers. Since thee structure of the theatret was converted into a citadel by the Arab rulers it didn`t share the fate of other buildings which were used as a quarries.

Het Romeinse theater, de skene, is goed bewaard. Het is 45 m lang, 8,5 m diep, één van de grootste Romeinse theaters ooit. Het bood toegang aan  15.000 mensen. De muur achteraan heeft Korinthische zuilen. Opvallend is de om het theater - door de Ajjoebiden - gebouwde versterking met dikke muren, vierkante torens, diepe grachten en een brug met 6 bogen.
