The Tell Abil and Tell um el Amad forms the ancient City Area of Abila, which is mentioned in the context of Plinys enumeration as the Region of Ampelloessa. This meaning comes from the plains overgrown by wine. Eusebios mentioned it as Abila Viniferos 12 miles east of Gadara. The Place at the Wadi Queilbeh was very important from the bronce age until the stron g earthquakes of the 7th century A.D. It was also known as a Titular See together with Scythopolis.

Raphana was a city of the Decapolithe where stayed  the Roman legions Legio III Gallica and of Legio XII Fulminata.
