Heraclea Lyncestis dates back to the middle of the IV century BC, founded by Philip II of Macedonia, Heraclea was an important military and strategic centre. In the II century after the Battle of Pydna in 158 BC, when Macedonia became a Roman Province Heraclea received her official name Septimia Aurelia Heraclea.
