Ur was an important Sum.erian city-state in ancient Mesopotamia, located at the site of modern ‘Tel Muqeihar/Muqayyar’ - ‘mound of bitumen’. Originally Ur was a  coastal city near the mouth of the Euphrates on the Persian Gulf.
